Berdan Institute
The Berdan Institute opened in 1976 as a school for medical secretaries, but by the mid 1980's had expanded to include a dental and medical assisting program. Today Berdan operates as an institute for health professionals in all fields and is located in Wayne, New Jersey. The school is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools in Falls Church, Virginia. The pharmacy technician program operates during the day and the evening for students who need a more flexible schedule due to current employment. The daytime program is made up of five 125-hour modules of study followed by a 160-hour or 30-week externship. The evening program consists of five seven-week modules that are followed up with a 160-hour externship. The pharmacy technician program is designed to prepare the student with all of the necessary skills and training required in a pharmacy setting including hospitals, medical centers, doctor's offices, and retail centers. Graduates of the program receive a certificate indicating that they are certified pharmacy technicians.
Courses take place in the classroom and are lecture based. Some classes allow students to interact with a hands-on approach in a clinical studies course which provides real-life experience and preparation for the students. Courses emphasize such skills and studies as medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, infection control and microbiology, pharmacy law and ethics, and regulatory standards. Throughout the program students become knowledgeable on how to apply basic pharmacy applications to real-world situations. Students learn such techniques involving compounding dosages, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy calculations and conversions, pediatric medication and dosages, and IV dosages.
