Maryland is a small state but it runs from the inlets and rivers of the Chesapeake Bay area to the Appalachian Mountains in the west. The southern part of the state offers easy access to the nation's capital, while farther north is the thriving city of Baltimore with museums, shopping, and the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. Throughout the state are historic sites, state parks, and wildlife refuges. At the easternmost edge is Ocean City with beautiful Atlantic Ocean beaches; nearby are Assateague and Chincoteague islands with their famous wild horses. At the other end of the state the Wisp Resort offers snow skiing opportunities.
